South Korea has recorded three new cases of African swine fever (ASF) on farms in the central and southern regions of the country. The total number of outbreaks since the beginning of the year has risen to 14.

South Korea’s quarantine authorities confirmed three additional ASF outbreaks at pig farms in different parts of the country, according to the Central Disaster Management Headquarters for ASF.

The new outbreaks were reported at farms in Jeongeup (North Jeolla Province), Gimcheon (North Gyeongsang Province) and Hongseong (South Chungcheong Province). As a result, the total number of ASF cases in the country this year has reached 14. South Korea confirmed its first ASF case of 2026 on January 16.

Quarantine teams have already been dispatched to the affected farms to carry out epidemiological investigations. To prevent further spread of the disease, about 10,000 pigs raised on the three farms are scheduled to be culled.

In addition, a 48-hour standstill order has been imposed on pig movements and the operation of related facilities in the affected and neighbouring regions to limit animal movement and reduce the risk of virus transmission.

Amid concerns about further spread during the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, authorities announced plans to inspect all of the country’s roughly 4,800 pig farms by February 28.

Quarantine officials are also intensifying efforts to combat the illegal import and distribution of livestock products. Previous investigations indicated that ASF may have been introduced through unauthorized animal products, prompting stricter monitoring and enforcement.

African swine fever does not pose a risk to humans but is highly contagious and fatal to pigs. There is currently no effective vaccine or treatment for the disease.
