Catalonia’s Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food has approved a decision to modify ASF prevention and control measures in the region. At the same time, the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture’s reference laboratory confirmed 18 additional ASF cases.
Since the first detection of the virus in two wild boars in November 2025, 980 animals have been tested in Spain, of which 103 returned positive results. In the highest-risk zone, within a 0–6 km radius, it is estimated that around 200 wild boars still need to be tested.
To reduce wild boar populations in Catalonia, capture efforts have been intensified, particularly within 0–20 km of the outbreak sites. Authorities are using traps, suppressed shooting and tracking with canine units. In parallel, teams continue searching for wild boar carcasses within a 6 km radius, installing fences and containment barriers. Veterinary inspections are also being carried out on pig farms, where no cases in domestic pigs have been detected so far.
The new Catalan resolution introduces changes to the regime in different risk zones. The main adjustments concern the low-risk zone (6–20 km), where some restrictions have been lifted. In the high-risk zone (0–6 km), where all confirmed cases are concentrated, restrictions remain in place. A third zone with specific measures has also been designated — the Collserola Natural Park.
As of January 30, and provided the epizootic situation remains stable, restrictions on public access to natural areas in the low-risk zone have been lifted, both for private visits and for organized sports, educational or recreational activities.
Catalonia’s Minister of Agriculture stated that intensified wild boar captures and coordinated work with the sector, experts and local authorities have delivered results and made it possible to ease restrictions in the 6–20 km zone. At the same time, residents were urged to remain vigilant and comply with the current rules.
Despite the partial relaxation of measures, the ASF situation in the region remains under close veterinary supervision.
