The Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has submitted a report to the Prime Minister on an initiative to build multi-storey pig farms. The project, proposed by BAF Vietnam Agriculture Joint Stock Company and Xuan Thien Thanh Hoa Joint Stock Company, involves the creation of a six-storey ‘smart’ farm capable of housing 64,000 sows and producing 1.6 million commercial pigs annually.

The expected cost of the project exceeds 12 trillion dong (approximately $472 million), and annual revenue could reach $500 million. According to forecasts, the full return on investment will take 5–5.5 years. The world's largest pork producer, China's Muyuan Group, which has extensive experience in the development of multi-storey farms, is participating in the project.

Vietnam is considering this decision in response to the need to modernise the industry, ensure biosafety, reduce land use and minimise environmental impact. Pig farming accounts for 62–65% of the country's total meat production, and by the end of 2024, Vietnam ranked sixth in the world in terms of pork production (5.2 million tonnes) and fourth in terms of consumption.

The idea of ‘pig skyscrapers’ is not new: there are already more than 4,500 such buildings in China. Local farms, reaching 26 floors, use artificial intelligence, blockchain and sensors to monitor the condition of animals, as well as automated cleaning and waste management systems. Such farms make it possible to significantly increase land use efficiency, optimise personnel costs and reduce the risk of epidemics — the consequences of the crisis that China's pig industry experienced after the ASF outbreak in 2018.

Vietnam hopes that this high-tech approach will help it avoid similar threats and increase the stability of its food sector. If the prime minister supports the initiative, the country will begin piloting its first multi-storey pig farm in the near future.
