Campylobacteriosis and salmonellosis remained prevalent zoonotic diseases in the EU in 2022, as per the annual report by the European Food Safety Authority. Although cases were lower than pre-pandemic levels, campylobacteriosis reported 137,107 cases, with chicken meat as the primary source.

Salmonellosis, the second most reported disease, had 65,208 cases, with 19 Member States meeting targets for reduction in poultry-related cases. The report also highlighted a 44% increase in foodborne outbreaks (5,763 cases) compared to 2021, causing the highest outbreak-related deaths in a decade (64), mainly attributed to Listeria monocytogenes and spanning various food types. The use of whole genome sequencing enhanced outbreak detection.
