From 12 August to 30 September, Finnish customs announced tighter food inspections at Helsinki ports due to the worsening situation with African swine fever (ASF) in the Baltic countries. Special attention will be paid to passenger traffic with Estonia, the agency said.

This summer, new cases of the disease were recorded in the Baltic states, particularly in Estonia.

Finnish Customs emphasises that the virus can spread through meat products that travellers carry with them. Therefore, the increased control will focus on these goods, and service dogs trained to find food products will assist in the inspections.

Customs also reminds that there are bans and restrictions on the import of meat, wild boar meat and products containing them from certain EU territories. Importation is only permitted under very limited conditions.

The Finnish Food Agency has called on travellers to refrain from importing meat, sausages and other animal products from abroad in order to prevent the spread of dangerous diseases.
