Lolland is Denmark’s fourth-largest island. Achieving PRRS-free status marks another important milestone in the country’s national pig herd recovery programme.
For several years, farmers, veterinarians and consultants have worked together to reduce the spread of the infection and gradually eliminate it from Danish pig herds.
In addition to Lolland, Bornholm, Samsø and several municipalities on the island of Funen have already achieved PRRS-free status.
Industry representatives note that the growing number of areas without positive herds confirms the effectiveness of the joint effort and is gradually bringing the country closer to its goal of becoming completely free of PRRS.
Further progress is also being recorded on Zealand. At present, only a few PRRS-positive herds remain in the municipality of Holbæk.
Recovery plans have already been developed for all affected farms, creating a basis for further reducing the number of positive herds in the region.
Thus, the geographical spread of PRRS in Denmark continues to narrow, with an increasing number of regions achieving disease-free status.
