The European Commission has approved two German State aid schemes totaling €1 billion to improve animal welfare in livestock breeding.

The European Commission has approved two German programs with a budget of about 1 billion euros to support pig farmers in breeding pigs. The first scheme, worth €675 million, will provide grants of up to 60% of eligible investments to modernize sites to improve welfare and limit CO2 emissions by 2030. The second scheme, worth €325 million, will provide grants of up to 80% of the costs to improve livestock practices to higher welfare standards by 2031. Both schemes are open to small and medium-sized livestock producers in Germany.
