Digitalization is becoming one of the key drivers of the sector’s development, helping improve traceability, productivity, and compliance with modern sustainability requirements.

Spain’s meat industry is actively embracing digital technologies, viewing digital transformation as one of the main drivers of competitiveness, efficiency, and sustainable development. This is highlighted in a new report by the Digital Skills and Employment Observatory, developed with the support of the IMANcorp Foundation and the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

The study examines the impact of technological transformation on production processes, work organization, and workforce training needs within the meat sector.

According to the report, the industry plays a crucial role in the Spanish economy due to its strong production capacity, export performance, and employment contribution. As a result, further digitalization is considered essential for maintaining competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.

The findings show that basic digital solutions are already widely implemented across many companies, particularly in document management, product traceability, and process integration. In the beef sector, for example, animal identification and batch control systems provide fully digital traceability throughout the production chain.

At the same time, Industry 4.0 technologies—including robotics, advanced automation, and data analytics—are being adopted primarily by large companies. Small and medium-sized enterprises continue to advance at a slower and more uneven pace due to investment constraints.

The report also notes that automation is not viewed as a threat to employment. Instead, modern technologies help reduce physically demanding tasks, improve productivity, and partially address the labor shortages currently affecting the sector.

Experts further emphasize the positive impact of digitalization on the industry's image. The adoption of new technologies contributes to higher food safety standards, greater consumer confidence, and increased attractiveness of careers related to the meat industry.

As a result, digital transformation is becoming one of the key strategic priorities for Spain’s meat sector, helping companies adapt to evolving market requirements while ensuring long-term competitiveness.
