African swine fever (ASF) continues to spread rapidly around the world, affecting new regions in Asia, Europe and Africa. During July 2025, dozens of new outbreaks of the disease were recorded in both domestic pigs and wild fauna, indicating a threatening situation for global pig farming.

Asia: increase in cases in India, Malaysia, Korea and Vietnam

New cases of ASF have been reported among domestic pigs in South and Southeast Asia:

  • India: Outbreaks have been confirmed in the states of Assam and Nagaland. In the district of Phek, the sale, slaughter and transport of pigs has been halted following numerous animal deaths. In Assam, infections have been reported in the Bajali district. In total, over the past five years, more than 50,000 pigs have died or been destroyed in the state, and affected farmers have been paid compensation totalling more than $258,000. Scientists from the state of Sikkim have developed a new PCR test for diagnosing ASF, which could change approaches to detecting the disease.
  • Malaysia: Since the beginning of July, outbreaks of ASF have been recorded on four pig farms in the state of Penang. More than 1,080 pigs have died or been destroyed, and another 6,000 animals remain on the infected farms. The authorities assure that the situation is under control.
  • Vietnam: The country's Ministry of Agriculture reports 970 outbreaks of ASF in 33 provinces, with over 100,000 pigs dead. The disease is actively spreading in 30 provinces. The authorities are calling for tighter veterinary controls.
  • South Korea: The 54th outbreak of ASF among domestic pigs has been confirmed on a farm with 8,900 animals in Gyeonggi Province. In total, more than 26,700 pigs have been infected in the country since the beginning of the year, with additional cases of ASF detected among wild boars.
  • Philippines: Another 150,000 doses of AVAC ASF vaccine are expected to be delivered from Vietnam. The Minister of Agriculture expressed hope that it will be approved for commercial use as soon as possible.

Europe: over 400 outbreaks of ASF among domestic pigs in 2025

The European Commission reports 101 new ASF outbreaks among domestic animals in nine countries in the last two weeks, bringing the total number of cases to 405. The highest number of outbreaks was recorded in:

  • Romania — 228
  • Serbia — 73
  • Moldova — 37

Lithuania has recorded its first outbreaks of 2025, expanding the geographical spread to 13 countries. Three commercial farms in Estonia (3.8–6.2 thousand heads) have also confirmed the presence of the virus.

As for wild fauna, since the beginning of the year, 7,436 cases of ASF have been recorded among wild boars in 18 countries in Europe, including:

  • Poland — 2,546
  • Germany — 1,697
  • Latvia — 711
  • Hungary — 654

Africa: South Africa and Senegal report new cases

  • There are two new ASF outbreaks in South Africa: in the provinces of Free State (100 pigs) and Gauteng (73 pigs). Since 2019, 219 outbreaks have been registered in the country.
  • In Senegal, six ASF outbreaks were officially confirmed in four regions in the first half of 2024, affecting 540 pigs.
