In the first half of 2026, Spain purchased 1,829,506 live pigs from abroad, compared with 2,839,861 head imported between January and June 2025.
The 35.6% decline brought an end to the upward trend in imports observed in previous years. Purchasing dynamics were affected, among other factors, by the animal health situation in the Spanish pig sector following the confirmation of African swine fever in wild boar in November 2025.
The Netherlands remained Spain’s largest supplier of live pigs. In the first half of the year, Spain imported 1,193,696 pigs from the country, accounting for 65.2% of total imports. However, shipments declined by 28.9% compared with the same period in 2025, when they exceeded 1.67 million head.
Portugal ranked second, supplying 255,423 pigs, 19.4% fewer than a year earlier.
Belgium exported 249,586 pigs to Spain. Compared with the first half of 2025, shipments fell by 54.6%, one of the sharpest declines among the main suppliers.
Other countries also significantly reduced their exports. Denmark supplied 59,935 pigs, down 42.3% year on year. Shipments from France fell by 64.2% to 52,121 head, while imports from Germany decreased by 58.4% to 14,373 head.
Despite the overall decline in imports, the market structure remained largely unchanged. Together, the Netherlands, Portugal and Belgium accounted for almost 93% of all live pig shipments to Spain in the first half of 2026.
