The training brought together representatives of local government authorities, community heads, professionals from the social and education sectors, civil society organisations and other specialists who work directly with local residents.
Over the course of two days, participants discussed why the improper and uncontrolled use of antibiotics contributes to the development of antimicrobial resistance, as well as the role communities can play in changing the behaviour of animal owners. Particular attention was given to risk communication — how to explain clearly and convincingly the importance of consulting a veterinarian and using antimicrobials responsibly.
The training sessions were conducted under the Meeting Targets and Maintaining Epidemic Control (EpiC) project, funded by the U.S. Department of State, with the participation of the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders.
The training series will continue online. On 12 August, a free training session entitled “Responsible Use of Antibiotics in Commercial Livestock Production” will take place via Zoom. It will provide an opportunity to participate for those who were unable to attend the regional events.
The online training programme will cover changes in veterinary legislation regarding antibiotic use, practical approaches to preventing antimicrobial resistance, as well as protocols for the prevention and treatment of the most common bacterial infections in pig production.
Participation is free of charge. Advance registration is required via the following form:
