Since the first ASF detection in South Korea in 2019, 52 farm outbreaks have been recorded, directly affecting more than 196,600 pigs. As of April 23, a total of 4,247 ASF cases have also been reported among wild boar, according to Pig People.
Rising losses in India
In late March, ASF re-emerged in the northeastern Indian state of Mizoram. By April 26, more than 3,000 pigs had died of the disease, and up to 1,000 more were culled to prevent further spread, according to the Indian Express. Confirmed cases have been reported in 46 communities across four districts. More than half of the pig deaths occurred in Siaha, with other outbreaks in Lawngtlai, Lunglei, and Mamit.
Almost 100 families have already received financial compensation for their losses, according to the state’s Animal Health and Veterinary Department. ASF outbreaks have occurred in Mizoram every year since 2021, with the latest spike attributed to a combination of hot and rainy weather conditions.
Europe: new ASF cases in domestic pigs and wild boar
As of April 30, eight European countries had reported a total of 201 ASF outbreaks in domestic pigs in 2025, according to the European Commission’s Animal Disease Information System. Over the past week alone, new cases were confirmed in Greece (the first of the year), Moldova, Ukraine, and 14 more in Romania.
Romania leads the region with 131 outbreaks this year, followed by Moldova (33). In Ukraine, ASF was confirmed in central Kirovohrad province after four pigs died from a herd of 91.
Greece’s outbreak involved a farm with 56 pigs in the region of Xanthi — the first case in domestic pigs there since June 2024. In Romania, between April 14 and 29, 16 new outbreaks were reported, including 13 backyard herds and three involving dead pigs found on public land, spread across 10 counties.
In wild boar populations, ASF remains widespread. By April 30, 17 European countries had reported 5,573 ASF outbreaks in wild boar through the EC system. In just one week, 272 new outbreaks were logged, with the highest increases in Poland (+130) and Germany (+54). Other countries reporting new cases include Bosnia-Herzegovina, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Romania, Slovakia, and Ukraine.
Poland remains the most affected country in 2025 with 1,925 wild boar cases, followed by Germany (1,161), Latvia (589), Hungary (469), Lithuania (397), and Italy (351). In comparison, 21 countries reported 7,892 ASF outbreaks in wild boar throughout 2024.
ASF confirmed in Ghana
ASF outbreaks recently suspected in Damongo, in the Savannah region of northern Ghana, have now been officially confirmed, according to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation. In March, another spike in pig deaths occurred in the Kwahu area in southeastern Ghana. Although ASF is also suspected there, the cause has not yet been confirmed.
ASF continues to pose a serious global threat to pig farming, demanding close surveillance, coordinated response, and strict biosecurity measures.
