EU: Piglet Demand Recovers

In week 44 of 2026, slaughter pig prices remained stable in Europe’s main pork-producing countries. At the same time, demand for piglets across the EU strengthened noticeably as space became available on finishing farms and seasonal supply declined.

Conditions in the piglet market are gradually improving. Higher numbers of slaughter pigs are freeing up space on finishing farms, which is being quickly refilled with new batches of piglets as cooler weather sets in.

At the same time, piglet supply is declining seasonally. As a result, the backlog of unsold animals accumulated over previous weeks is gradually being reduced, although experts estimate that several more weeks will be needed for the market to return to full balance.

In Austria, piglet sales are also gradually picking up as demand increases. However, a sustained market recovery will only be possible once slaughter pig prices stabilise.
