Croatia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has established a new infected zone in Virovitica-Podravina County following confirmation of African swine fever (ASF) in a wild boar. The zone includes 26 settlements across several municipalities.

The ASF case was confirmed on 22 October in a wild boar found within hunting ground X/112 Sopje in the municipality of Sopje. The new decision establishing the infected zone was adopted on 27 October 2026 and entered into force the same day.

The area of hunting ground X/112 Sopje had previously already been designated as Restricted Zone I under the EU regionalisation system.

The new infected zone includes settlements in the municipalities of Gradina, Sopje, Suhopolje and Voćin, as well as within the territory of the town of Slatina. Disease-control measures apply in these areas to animal owners and transporters, veterinarians, hunters, and people carrying out forestry and other activities within restricted zones.

Previously established restricted zones and the corresponding measures in other parts of Virovitica-Podravina County remain in force. The boundaries of the infected zone may be adjusted depending on the epidemiological situation.

Within the infected zone, pigs may be slaughtered for own consumption provided biosecurity requirements are met and disease monitoring is carried out. The authorised veterinarian must be notified at least 48 hours before slaughter, and the animals must undergo a clinical examination within 24 hours before slaughter.

There is also an obligation to report any wild boar carcasses found to the nearest authorised veterinary organisation or the relevant inspection authority.

According to the Ministry, ASF was confirmed in two wild boar in Virovitica-Podravina County during October. The most recent outbreak in domestic pigs in Croatia was recorded on 4 August 2026, and no new cases in domestic pigs have been reported since then.
