Germany and China have agreed to develop a regionalization agreement that could pave the way for the resumption of German pork exports to the Chinese market despite the presence of African swine fever (ASF).

The German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture welcomed the signing of a declaration of intent between the two countries, calling it an important step toward restoring trade flows.

The document envisages the preparation of a regionalization agreement that would allow the future export of German pork and other pork products to China even if ASF cases occur in certain regions of the country. This approach is based on the recognition of the regionalization principle, whereby restrictions apply only to affected areas rather than the entire country.

A corresponding roadmap was agreed during the German Chancellor’s visit to China. It предусматривает recognition by the Chinese side of the effectiveness of the regionalization measures implemented by Germany to control the spread of ASF.

It should be recalled that after the first case of African swine fever was detected in Germany in 2020, China banned imports of German pork and pork products. A potential regionalization agreement could become an important step toward restoring access to one of the world’s largest markets.

In addition, the parties signed a separate protocol that, for the first time, allows Germany to export poultry products to China.
