In 2025, pork production in Vietnam increased by 4% to nearly 5.4 million tonnes. The growth was achieved despite significant herd losses in the second half of the year caused by the spread of African swine fever (ASF), according to the country’s General Statistics Office.

Official data show that the first half of 2025 was relatively favourable for the pig sector. Effective disease control and attractive selling prices encouraged farmers to maintain and even expand production. However, from the third quarter onward, the situation deteriorated sharply as ASF outbreaks spread across the country, leading to a substantial decline in pig inventories in several regions, particularly in the provinces of Cao Bang, Lai Chau and Quang Tri.

Nevertheless, large integrated companies and industrial farms managed to maintain stable production levels thanks to strict biosecurity measures. This allowed some provinces, including Tay Ninh, Gia Lai and Lam Dong, to increase their herds and partially offset overall national losses. As a result, total pork output in 2025 reached nearly 5.4 million tonnes, up 4% year on year.

At the same time, an imbalance emerged in foreign trade. According to the Import-Export Department, citing data from the Customs Department, Vietnam’s pork imports rose significantly in 2025, while export volumes declined. This points to growing dependence of the domestic market on imported pork amid fluctuations in domestic production and the ongoing impact of the epizootic situation.
