A new case of African swine fever (ASF) has been confirmed in a wild boar in the municipality of El Papiol near Barcelona. The positive result came from a sample collected from a dead animal more than five months ago. Since the start of the outbreak in Catalonia, a total of 424 positive cases have been confirmed.

According to the Department of Agriculture of the Government of Catalonia, 377 samples were tested over the past week, of which 376 returned negative results. The positivity rate during the period was therefore around 0.3%.

Since the first ASF case was detected in November, specialists have tested 15,113 wild boar, with the virus confirmed in 424 of them.

The authorities are continuing enhanced wild boar population control measures in the risk zone. A total of 994 staff from the relevant services were involved in operations during the week.

In addition, 28 driven hunts were carried out over the weekend, involving 672 hunters, 653 dogs and a further 48 hunters conducting shooting from hides.

The measures are aimed at containing the spread of ASF among wild boar and strengthening disease surveillance in the Barcelona area.
