At the request of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), the European Commission has agreed to provide financial aid to dairy farms located in restriction and surveillance zones, as well as to all pig finishing farms in the region. An implementing regulation specifying the exact amount of aid is currently being prepared.
BMEL submitted the application at the end of February under Article 220(3) of Regulation (EU) No. 1308/2013 on the common organization of the market. The state of Brandenburg had previously committed to providing its co-financing contribution, as required under EU legislation.
The support measure is intended to compensate for farmers’ income losses caused by movement restrictions and market disruptions following the FMD outbreak. Damages are currently estimated at nearly 8 million euros.
