In early August, prices for slaughter pigs continued to rise, as evidenced by the results of the weekly monitoring of purchase prices by the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders.

For the week ending 27 July, the EU spec SPP stood at 209.54p/kg, a minor gain of 0.13p on the previous week. Germany has detected another case of African swine fever (ASF) in a wild boar. The case was detected in the state of Hesse in the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg. It is the first positive ASF case in the district, according to German pig group ISN. 

Not only is Germany fighting with African Swine Fever (ASF), but also in Italy the virus has found its way again to swine farms. In the northern regions, 6 farms have reported infections, with altogether at least 76 infected pigs.

For the second year in a row, the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders (AUPB), in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), has been helping domestic producers maintain high standards in veterinary medicine and feed safety within the framework of the Animal Health in Ukraine Program.

Ukraine continues to conduct microbiological monitoring of bacterial pathogens in pigs as part of the project of the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders (AUPB) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) "Keeping Animals Healthy in Ukraine". The research included determining antibiotic susceptibility using the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) method.

Pig farmers are calling for greater assurances that border checks on meat coming in from the European Union (EU) are being conducted properly as the number of African Swine Fever cases reaches a 10-year high.

Owing to a fresh round of US sanctions, russian commodity exporters increasingly complain about difficulties in collecting payments for the goods delivered to Chinese customers. The issue doesn’t bode well with russia’s plans to boost pork exports to China in the 2nd half of 2024.
